Blurry vision   November 30th, 2010

While the eyes of your physical body give you the ability to see, the eyes of your dream body represent your ability to know, to understand, “I see what you mean.”  The eyes of your physical body allow you to physically focus on an object, while the eyes of your dream body represent your ability to mentally “focus” on a goal or task.  The eyes of your physical body also give you the ability to view what surrounds you, while the eyes of your dream body represent your point of view, your opinion and your ability to change it.

In dreams, your eyes can suffer an array of afflictions because, in waking life, we all have an array of issues or behaviors that keep us from our focus, that sway our opinion or that keep us from opening our psychological eyes to see what is really going on.  The most common affliction our dream eyes suffer is that of blurry vision.

Dear Lauri,
I have a reoccurring dream that I am trying to drive down the road but everything is so blurry.  I cannot focus in on anything. What does this mean? - Lauren, Franklin, TN

Lauri: This dream comes to you whenever you need to “focus” on a particular issue in your life.  Something may be going on that you aren’t seeing for what it really is.  Can you think of anything to which you may be turning a “blind eye?”  Or perhaps you simply don’t have the “focus” and “drive” (motivation) you used to have in some area of your life.  Whatever the case, these dreams are telling you to “open your eyes,” look closely at your issues and at your life as a whole so that you can safely go down the road life has in store for you.

Lauren replies: I am going through a divorce at the age of 25. My soon to be ex-husband finally admitted he was an alcoholic after two years of ups and downs. I finally realized that I have a great job and that I do not need him to hold me back, or try to hurt things that I have worked so hard for. That interpretation makes great sense!

Notice how Lauren says in her dream report, “I cannot focus on anything.”  That is the message her dreaming mind wanted to convey.  Lauren’s career path, if not her whole life, had been blurred by her husband’s alcoholism.  She was so focused on him that she could no longer see her career goals, or any goals, that she originally chose for herself.

When you can “see” the powerful messages hidden within each and everyone of your dreams, you’ll also see how much easier your life will be.  Relationships, career, self esteem, decisions… every part of your life becomes clearer and easier, because your wiser inner mind knows all and gives you the answers in your dreams!!

Dream books make GREAT GIFTS!!  Why not give someone you love a copy of one of my books?  They’ll think of you every time they get an “Aha! moment” from being able to understanding their dreams. It’s the gift that keeps on giving!

“This is an awesome idea for a Christmas gift for a person I never know what to get.  I ordered today!” -Nancy Walter, Brentwood, CA

Along came a spider…   November 19th, 2010

There’s nothing more annoying than a roach scurrying across the floor, or an army of ants invading the pantry, or a swarm of mosquitoes chomping on everyone at your Barbecue.  That is why, when we get annoyed over situations or people that pester and infest our mental space, we say that something or someone is really “bugging” us.  This is also when these little suckers will creep and crawl into our dreams.

The type of bug in your dream is also important as it will give you even more information as to what or whom is bugging you in real life. Spiders are one of the more common bugs we will find in our dream scape. Read on to find out why. This is from my nationally syndicated column, The Dream Zone…

Dear Lauri: In the corner of a cardboard box was an enormous spider the size of my hand. I tried to kill it with one of those liquidizing wands. I tried about three times to kill the spider. As hard as I tried the spider was not in the least hurt nor threatened. It didn’t run away it just stood its ground and never moved. – Greer 61, Surrey, England

Lauri: When bugs infest our dreams, it’s a good indication that something or someone is really bugging us in waking life. Spiders in particular often are connected to deceit, a web of lies woven by someone around you. It is significant that you associated the spider with the size of your hand. This is the way your dream is trying to show you that this situation is absolutely something you can “handle.” The fact that you tried three times to kill the spider suggests that in waking life you attempted to put an end to this situation to no avail. Who has stood their ground with you? The cardboard box is important. A lot of times, when we dream of card board it is connected to money issues. It could also be related to you needing “to move” on (as we use card board boxes to pack and move) from this person or situation. It seems the message is change your tactics or move on, otherwise things will never change.

Greer replies: I think you have just about got it right. I was in a job situation where a colleague was on my case, no matter what I did or said would budge him. One time he even shoulder butted me. I am in the process of moving house, now that I have lost my job, I can’t afford to live at my present location in London. You are quite right. I know I have to alter my strategy and move on.

Your dreams don’t have to bug you anymore! Imagine being able to easily figure them out every single morning! Figuring out your dreams is not only fun, it provides you with priceless information and advice you need for your life.

Grab yourself a copy of one of my books and you’ll easily understand your dreams every morning and get a HUGE edge in life.

“Wow, what an amazing book so full of information! I will def be keeping this one on my nightstand and refer to it often!”

The wisdom of a broken comb   November 18th, 2010

Just like in real life, things break in our dream life too.  For example, you may have had a dream where your cell phone was broken.  Another common object that we find broken in our dreams is the toilet.  No matter what it is that is broken, shattered, ripped or out of order in your dreams can always be connected to something in waking life that needs fixing such as a relationship or behavior.  A broken phone would be connected to a communication break down with someone in your life.  And a broken toilet would suggest your ability to relieve yourself of and flush away frustrations and negativity is not working well.  See how it works?

Yesterday I was on KAT Country 103 in Modesto, CA with DJ Walker when a gal called in with a dream about a broken comb.  Listen and find out how a seemingly mundane dream about a broken comb is actually full of sound advice on how this woman should deal with her father…

Notice how she was the one doing the breaking in the dream?  That’s a good indication that she contributed to the issue that tore her and her father apart. You may also be asking, “Why a comb?”  Good question!  I’m glad you asked.  :-)   A comb is used to detangle and straighten out hair. The comb, therefore, is her ability to detangle and straighten out the situation.  Since it was broken in the dream, her ability to straighten things out is not working so, as the dream clearly advised, it’s best that she just leave it alone.

Your dreams are such a powerful part of who you are.  They are giving you answers and direction, even warnings you need to know every night of your life. Why wouldn’t you want the ability to understand these important, even life-changing messages? Grab yourself a copy of one of my books and you’ll easily understand your dreams every morning and get a HUGE edge in life.

I absolutely love your books! They are helping me sort my dreams out already.” – Belinda, Savannah, GA

A lion in my mother’s bed   November 17th, 2010

Sometimes our dreams are a menagerie of the most exotic and wondrous animals.  No matter how fantastical and Dr. Seuss-like or how real and menacing, the animals our dreaming mind presents to us symbolize our primal instincts and behaviors, the way we naturally act or respond to situations without giving thought to it.

Tigers, lions, panthers, any sort of predatory animal that prowls into our dreams will symbolize our own predatory behavior, our ability to “hunt down” and catch what we want in life, whether it be a job, a relationship, a promotion, etc.  Predatory cats are particularly popular in women’s dreams because we gals identify with their feminine, feline nature.  The dream below is from my nationally syndicated column, The Dream Zone…

Dear Lauri,
I have a recurring dream that my mother had a lion in her bed wrapped up in a blanket! There were two holes in the blanket where I could see his eyes looking at me. When the lion started to get up, I started running! – Laura 43, St. Louis, MO

Lauri: Your dream suggests you are keeping your inner power, your courage, represented by the lion, under wraps. Why is the lion in your mom’s bed, of all places? If you’re a mom – particularly a single mom – then you may need to go out on the prowl and get yourself a worthy man who would be a good father to your children. Or perhaps you need to have more courage in disciplining them. If this doesn’t seem to be the case, then in what way are you like your mom?

Laura replies: I am a single mom, but my daughter is 21. Going out on the prowl for a man makes sense! I feel that, like my mother, I am a weak person. She is very giving, always doing for others and not for herself.

Lauri: In that case, your dream is showing you that you need to get out of your mothers comfort zone (symbolized by her bed) of being too nice and giving and awaken and uncover your inner lioness. It’s time to roar!! When you do, the dream will stop.

Fascinating Dream Fact: Whether she is still on this planet or not, our moms show up in our dreams, on average, about once a week!

Animals in dreams, sex dreams, death, weird things happening to your body PLUS way cool dream art… It’s ALL in there!  Grab your copy of So, What Did You Dream Last Night? and understand your dreams like never before!

“I have both of your books. I love them!!  It is so much fun to look up what my dreams mean in the morning.  I don’t know what I would do without them!” – Amy, Clearfield, UT

Do you ever “dream in food?”  Boy, I sure do! Just about every other night I have some form of pastry, or candy in my dreams! Sure, food in dreams can be commenting on your waking life diet and showing what you need to add or remove, but more often, food in dreams is connected to what you desire, what you “hunger” for in waking life, such as a promotion, a new relationship, or in this dreamer’s case, a little less chaos in her life.  This is from my nationally syndicated column, The Dream Zone…

Dear Lauri,
I had a dream my boss was forcing me to make a pumpkin pie from scratch.  She kept telling me it’s her secret family recipe.  She even handed me a pumpkin I had to use. She was being mean in my dream and normally she’s a very nice person.
– Candice 30, Salt Lake City, UT

Lauri: The family recipe that is continually mentioned in your dream may refer to your own family and the recipe for success in family life.  And I think that’s why your dreaming mind is using pumpkin pie specifically, because pumpkin pie is mostly associated with the big family holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas.  So this dream is most definitely trying to help you with a family issue.

Since your boss is not acting like herself, then she is not playing herself but rather standing in for your own role as boss in the family, as well as your ability to manage the family, the finances, etc.  Are you the one wearing the pants, making the decisions, and so on?  It seems that right now you may be feeling you have too much on your plate or too tall of an order from your family to deal with.

Speaking of pies, as Astronomer Carl Sagan once said, “In order to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first create the universe.”   In other words, rather than focusing on the perfect final outcome, work on getting all the little things right that come before it.

Candice replies: You are so right on! I am a single mom doing everything.  I get no help at all from my daughter’s father or from the state. I have been stressed out that I’m not ever going to get help and the day before I had the dream, I was home from work with a sick kid. Thanks.

Your dreams are working hard for you too, helping and guiding you with every single area of your life. If you would just listen to them, you’d be surprised how much practical advice they are offering.

When you can understand what your dreams are telling you, you can make huge positive changes in your life and you’ll wonder why you didn’t start listening to your dreams sooner! Grab yourself a copy of one of my books and you’ll never have to wonder what your dreams mean again!

“I am not a reader but I cannot put these books down or stop thinking about what I’m learning!  I have not been this excited in I don’t know how long.  My husband originally got me these books because I have crazy dreams constantly and we wanted to try and make sense of these dreams, but reading these books, it’s so much more than just trying to make sense of dreams, it really is a whole other world! Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for changing my life!!”   – Shannon Harris

Now that I’ve decided to get back to focusing on my art, namely recreating my dreams, my dreaming mind has decided to keep my momentum going.  Last night I dreamed I had an enormous fish living in our pool. It was so big that it practically took up the entirety of the pool.  And when it jumped into the air, it made a helluva splash when it landed back in the water!

Usually, water in dreams is all about your emotions. The state of the water in your dream will mimic your emotional state in waking life.  For example, if you’re dreaming of flooding water then you are likely in an emotional state that is getting increasingly worse in waking life.  If you dream of a pool then that is a good indication that you have contained and are now in control of your emotional state, just as a pool is contained and controlled water (with the ph and chlorine levels, etc.)  HOWEVER, sometimes the water in your dream can be more about your creative “juices” rather than your emotions… and I believe that is the case with me.

You see, fish are one of the more common symbols I dream about.  For many years I have dreamed about forgetting to feed fish that I had in an aquarium.  I would dream this pretty much on a weekly basis. I attributed it to creative ideas I had been neglecting as far as my website or promotion ideas I needed to feed in order to get more radio appearances.  While that could have been the case, on some level, I am now certain that the dying, starving fish in my dreams all these years were really gentle nudges from my wiser inner mind that my art was dying a slow painful death, languishing in my no longer fertile creative juices… sigh.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have started delving into my art again thanks to a dream I had that made it abundantly clear that it was my art talent, not web or promotional ideas that was dying.  So now that I am “diving” into my creative pool again, my dreaming mind is giving me even more guidance in the form of the giant fish. Just as the fish was confined in too small of a space, my art and desire to create is confined – for the moment – to only digital art because I don’t have the correct art supplies I need to paint or draw. My dream is telling me that I can really “make a splash” once I get the proper materials.

DREAM TIP: If you can find a pun or a figure of speech in your dream, you have found a good part of the message!

And so I will listen to my dream’s advice and I will go get the pencils, the paints and the canvases I need so I can make myself, and my dreaming mind happy.  Because, believe you me, when your dreaming mind is not happy with you it will nag you to death with those annoying, persistent recurring dreams. Who needs that when we already have our mothers to do so?

Your dreams are guiding and advising you too, every single night of your life!

When you can understand what your dreams are telling you, you can make huge positive changes in your life and you’ll wonder why you didn’t start listening to your dreams sooner! Grab yourself a copy of one of my books and you’ll never have to wonder what your dreams mean again!

Dream inspired art… I’m back!   November 12th, 2010

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have started delving into my art again thanks to a dream I had recently that told me I had allowed this part of myself to be stripped away.  In particular, I am going to focus on recreating my own dreams and, lucky you, you will get to see them here on my blog as they are dreamed and then created. As you can see, I have posted the first of – what I hope – will be many to come.  This one I have named, “I’m back.”  This was done digitally because, since it has been so long since I’ve gotten my hands dirty with paint and pastels, etc. I don’t have the proper art supplies… yet!

Here is what all this crazy looking symbolism means and pertains to my life… and maybe you’ll get some insight into what some of these symbols may mean for you as well.  Obviously, that’s me down there in the corner looking at what is going on in the dream.

The wide open door looking out into the sky represents several opportunities that have “opened up” to me lately.  “The sky” is the limit, that is, if I play my cards right.  But due to some personal and emotional issues, what should be a wide open and welcoming opportunity has become “clouded” with uncertainty and even fear, hence the clouds.  I have allowed those clouds in due to my own weaknesses.

The hand that is reaching around the door frame was, in the dream, trying to turn on a light switch but couldn’t find it.  That represents my need to find certain things out, my need to “shed some light” on some physical unknowns I am currently dealing with.  It is a male hand rather than a female hand because it is my own male assertive energy that will take action on this unknown and get er dun:-) The hand couldn’t find the switch because I still haven’t found out what’s going on yet.

That coiled up snake on the wall is a cool symbol! Usually, snakes in dreams are connected to a man in the dreamer’s waking life that is exhibiting low down behavior – hence their shape -  OR it can be connected to health issues, hence the caduceus, the symbol for physicians… you know, the two snakes wrapped around the winged staff.  I think my dream has two meanings, one is a common meaning and the other is my own personal meaning. It certainly is related to my health issues I am trying to figure out.  The second meaning is connected my latest book “Dream On It,” which is about to come out.  It has a cool snake on the cover.  Here in my dream, the snake is coiled and ready to strike because 1. my book is about to hit newsstands everywhere in March and 2. I think I am on the verge of finding out what the deal is with my health issues.

As you can see, all these different symbols in my dream have come together to create a big, and pretty cool, picture for me… a picture with a message.  I believe the message is, “Be patient. You are in the dark and uncertain about some things right now but keep looking up. You can handle it (hence the hand in the dream). There are endless opportunities ahead.”

Your dreams work the exact same way. What may seem like a jumbled mess of random objects and happenings are in fact very important and powerful messages carefully pieced together by your wise and knowing dreaming mind.  When you can learn to put the pieces of your dream puzzle together, you’ll see the big picture, the important message you are giving yourself through the dream.

You know how dreams are, they’re full of over sized or mis-shapen objects, bizarre creatures and Twilight Zone-esque story lines… that is, unless it is a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder dream.   Unlike normal dreams, which utilize symbolism to communicate with the dreamer about his current life issues and goals, PTSD dreams are often literal representations of an actual traumatic event the dreamer has experienced. Victims of rape and/or abuse tend to suffer from PTSD dreams, individuals that witnessed or survived a catastrophe tend to suffer from PTSD dreams but the most common sufferer of PTSD dreams are war veterans.

On this Veterans’ Day, I want to share with you a glimpse into the psyche of a war-time veteran who currently suffers from PTSD dreams. He called in when I was on the air with Rick Rumble on FM99 in Norfolk, VA.  His dream shows how lost war-time vets feel after returning home, how their lives and their psyches are in pieces and how they are stuck emotionally and psychology due to the trauma they have witnessed and experienced. If you don’t want to listen to the chit chat in the introduction, simply forward to the :50 mark where Josh, the vet calls in.  Also, don’t laugh when I say “VW.”  I meant VA.  :-)

Can you imagine having to relive something so horrible every time you went to sleep? Josh has a tough road ahead of him but rest assured it is a road that will get easier, so long as he sticks to dream-work and continues getting the help the VA is offering.  I wish I had thought of it while I was on the air with Josh because I would have loved to have given him a copy of my book  Cracking The Dream Code which has an interactive day and dream journal as well as all my secrets and tips to controlling your dreams.

If you know a veteran who is suffering from PTSD dreams, please forward this post to them. They don’t have to continue living this way. They can overcome it and they can become whole again… and even stronger than they were before! Oh, also, please give them a hug and a big “Thank you” from me.

Ever dream of a house you used to live in?  I’ll bet you do! It’s very common to dream of your childhood home or even other homes you lived in at earlier points in your life. You also probably wake up wondering why your dreaming mind put you back there.  I’ll tell you!  It’s not about the house but about who you were when you lived in that house.  Let me share my recent dream with you so you can see what I mean.

In my dream, I was in the first home my husband and I bought together.  It was an old 1920′s bungalow that we totally refurbished.  I was walking around the house, exploring every room. It was neat to be back there. Everything looked pretty much the same… until I walked into my art room! It was stripped bare, all the way down to the dry wall. I stood there shocked and saddened… and then I woke up.  DREAM TIP: The point at which you wake up from a dream is usually where the main message is (that is, when you wake up naturally from a dream).

When I woke, I knew EXACTLY what that dream was telling me.  I had been neglecting my art for years and my dream was showing me that – in doing so – the artist part of me had been stripped down to nothingness… it was no longer a part of my identity.  This is why I felt saddened in the dream.  And so you see, the dream wasn’t really about that house but who I was when I lived there. I was painting or drawing everyday. In my current house, I don’t have an art room, and all my paint and brushes and canvases are in the basement. This picture is the last dream picture I ever did and this was probably 5 years ago, if not more. You can find it in my book So, What Did You Dream Last Night?

In fact, there’s a whole chapter on houses in dreams in this book and what all the different rooms in your house mean.

Because of this dream, I have decided to start painting and drawing again… especially painting and drawing my dreams. Art is a big part of who I am and I want to keep it alive and well in my identity so I can be my ultimate self. Stay tuned to my blog because I’ll be posting my art as it comes along.  :-)

There’s an awful lot to who you are too, and your dreams have a pretty cool way of showing you all the different parts of yourself in the form of various symbols.  When you can understand the symbols in your dreams you can understand yourself and your life like never before… and knowledge is power!

Grab yourself a copy of one of my books and you’ll easily understand your dreams every morning and get a HUGE edge in life.

Colors in dreams serve more than the simple purpose of creating a cool dreamscape, they also have a meaning… that is, when the color of something in a dream stands out.  The color is standing out to you because it has something important to say.  Read on to find out how a purple car in a dream help is helping a woman make an important career choice.  This is from my weekly newspaper column The Dream Zone…

Dear Lauri,
I dreamed I was in the market for a new car so I called my old personal trainer who, in the dream, was a car salesman and told him what I wanted. He said he’d have it ready. I show up at the dealership and it’s a purple sports car with glitter! After I jumped in and took off, I realized it was only a one-seater. I started to have second thoughts because I thought for sure it was a V6, but as I was accelerating I noticed that it was only a 4 cylinder. I called my trainer/dealer and told him I was going to bring it back. Then I woke up.
– Bobbi 35, New York

Lauri: You must be in the market for a new direction in waking life.  While it seems odd that your former trainer was the car dealer in the dream it is perfectly natural to your dreaming mind because he represents your ability to be disciplined, and that is what it will take to get yourself moving in this new direction in real life.  The car is purple because that is the color of devotion. You must not be feeling quite as devoted to this direction as you once were.  And it is glittery because that represents the glitz and glamor of it in your mind. It seems that once this idea became a reality you realized it wasn’t what you had hoped and it didn’t leave much room for anyone or anything else in your life (the one seat).   It is a 4 cylinder rather than a V6 because you are losing your “drive,” your motivation, to continue with it.   It seems that this new waking life direction just isn’t practical for your life and it’s best to go back to the drawing board.

Bobbi replies: I have been a personality in the media for about 12 years, and recently my commitments have taken over my life.   Going into the business, there was a small element of “glitz and glamour” thoughts, but I quickly learned that wasn’t going to be the case.  That passion and drive has certainly dwindled in the past few months, as it’s taken quite a toll on me living a truly happy and fulfilling life.   I have indeed been toying with the idea of heading in a totally different direction.

Everything in your dreams has an awful lot to say about your life. When you can understand what your dreams are telling you, you can make huge positive changes in your life and you’ll wonder why you didn’t start listening to your dreams sooner! Grab yourself a copy of one of my books and you’ll never have to wonder what your dreams mean again!

“I don’t know why I didn’t order these books YEARS ago. I’m halfway through “So What Did You Dream Last Night” and LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!  You had me cracking up several times.  I’m so happy to know I’m not the only one with completely off the wall dreams.”   – Gina, Springdale, PA
